Firecracker 100 racing begins Thursday

BUFFALO TWP — While no local driver has ever won the Firecracker 100 main event, Sarver resident Michael Norris keeps hanging around.

Norris has finished among te top 10 in the 100-lap feature before and has won a preliminary 25-lap feature. He’s also won five of the six Late Model features at Lernerille Speedway so far this season, including last week. Saxonburg’s Tyer Dietz owns the other feature win.

Lernerville will host its 18th annual Firecracker 100 Saturday night, the winner to receive $50,000. There will also be 25-lap features paying $5,000 to the winner on Thursday and Friday nights.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Series will provide the professional drivers for the weekend. Ricky Thornton Jr. of Martinsville, Ind. — last year’s Firecracker 100 winner — leads the Lucas Oil Late Model points race thus far with 3,470. Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., is second in points, Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, third.

The Firecracker 100 has had four dfferent winners over the past four years. Tim McCreadie won in 2022, Brandon Overton in 2021, Cade Dillard in 2020. Scott Bloomquist is the only three-time winner, but has not won since 2016.

McCreadie, Overton and Jimmy Mars have all won the event twice.

The RUSH Late Model Series will present the 50-lap Bill Emig Memorial on Saturday night. The winner of that race gets $20,000 along with a watch worth $7,500.

Norris leads Lernerville’s Late Model points race with 228, followed by Colton Flinner of Allison Park with 187, Dietz and Sarver’s John Garvin Jr. with 186, Sarver’s Ken Schaltenbrand with 176.

The grandstands will open at 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 3 p.m. on Saturday.
