Adagio Health’s WIC on Wheels pulls into Slippery Rock Giant Eagle
SLIPPERY ROCK — Since the start of April, Adagio Health’s “WIC on Wheels” mobile health van has been on the move around Butler and four other Western Pennsylvania counties, bringing the services of its Women, Infants and Children program to people who are unable to come to an Adagio Health office.
On Thursday, June 27, the WIC van set up in the parking lot of the Giant Eagle on Grove City Road in Slippery Rock, one of three visits that Adagio Health will make to Slippery Rock this year.
Slippery Rock is one of four Butler County destinations on the WIC on Wheels itinerary, with the other three being the Giant Eagle locations at the Clearview Mall and Moraine Pointe Plaza in Butler, as well as the Shop-n-Save in Cranberry Township.
Audrey Vidmar, nutrition project coordinator for Adagio Health, said WIC on Wheels is intended to serve people who are unable to access the services available at Adagio’s office on Sunset Drive in Butler.
Although Adagio Health maintains a satellite office in Slippery Rock, that office is open only once a month.
“We're trying to be more mobile for those families that cannot come to our WIC office in town in Butler,” Vidmar said. “We’re trying to be more helpful whenever we have families that live farther out, so we're just trying to see if they can get their WIC appointments done here instead of coming to the office.”
WIC on Wheels offers many of the services provided at Adagio Health’s main offices, including height, weight and iron checks for children, and distributing Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks, which can be used at participating farmers’ markets across Pennsylvania.
“We issue farmers’ market checks to families (with children) over the age of six months, and then they can use those farmers’ market checks in any farmers’ market in the state,” Vidmar said.
Vidmar said Adagio is hoping turnout increases as awareness of the program spreads.
“We usually get four to five walk-ins throughout the day,” Vidmar said. “We just started this. It’s a new program that we're doing, so we're hoping to get more throughout the rest of the year.”
In addition to Butler County, the WIC on Wheels van also will stop in Armstrong, Beaver, Indiana and Lawrence counties. The next stop for the van is the Giant Eagle in Aliquippa on Tuesday, July 2. The van will return to Butler County on July 25 when it comes to the Giant Eagle at the Clearview Mall for the second time.
