Scout gives back to park he spent his childhood in

Anthony Stoops, a rising junior at Butler Senior High School and a Scout in Troop 6, spent so much time in Preston Park throughout his life that he wanted his Eagle Scout project to be a contribution to the park.

On June 18, Anthony took wood and supplies to Preston Park in Butler Township to construct an octagonal table in the center of the Druid Circle section of the park. The new picnic table has eight sides, which relates to how eight laps around the circle is equal to one mile.

Anthony raised a little under $400 to fund the construction of the table, which he raised after receiving approval on the project from the Butler Township commissioners in April.

He still has to stain it — which he will probably do at the end of summer — but the end of the construction process was a major milestone to him.

Anthony said he spent a lot of time in the park as a young child hiking, fishing and geocaching, so the table will be a permanent reminder of his time spent there.

“We were here the day they opened Preston Park to the public,” said Beth Stoops, Anthony’s mother.
