Severe storms possible Saturday

A warm front with humid air could trigger slow-moving thunderstorms with a possibility of damaging winds and tornadoes during the day and night Saturday, June 29.

National Weather Service meteorologist Lee Hendricks said the warm, humid air will push into the area from the west-southwest and produce thunderstorms and rain storms across the region.

He said there will be a 15% chance of damaging winds and a 5% chance of tornadoes.

According to meteorologist Jared Rackley, southwest winds could blow around 60-70 mph, possibly reaching 90 mph. One to 2 inches of rain is possible.

“The best timing for (the storm) will be mid-afternoon to early evening (Saturday),” Rackley said.

“The warm, humid air gives us the chance of some severe rain in a short period of time with a chance of slow moving, heavy rain producing storms,” Hendricks said.

A leftover shower or thunderstorm might linger Sunday morning, but clear out of the area in the afternoon, he said.
