BUTLER TWP — The second Butler Area Community Day on Tuesday, July 2, at Alameda Park was an opportunity for people to get out and enjoy a bit of what Butler has to offer.

In a collaboration with the Butler County Parks and Recreation and Butler Township, the event featured several organizations, including Eat’n Park and the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation, Inc.

“I think there’s always an opportunity for the community to get some access to local government,” Butler Township manager Tom Knights said. “I think the amount of vendors that we have is a real good asset to both kids and families.”

The community day’s events included inflatable houses, ax throwing and a cookie decorating station.

“I think it’s good that the community comes out. ... Butler Township is a great place to live within the county, and we get new folks and of course people from outside the township,” Butler Township Commissioner Ed Natali said. “We appreciate the community spirit that gets built, and who doesn’t like a beautiful, sunny day in July?”

Around 5:30 p.m., community day attendees watched as an Allegheny Health Network LifeFlight helicopter flew overhead and landed on a flat hill to an excited crowd. After it landed, children could line up to have their pictures taken inside of the helicopter.

“This is a county-owned and -operated facility, but this is a beautiful park, we’ve got some great amenities out here, so we encourage people to come out and use them,” Natali said.

The Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation Inc., sold food to fund the Kids Weekend Backpack Program.

Other events included a martial arts demonstration, face painting and a fireworks display at the end of the community day.
