An armed Ellwood City man was fatally shot by police Tuesday afternoon, July 2, in Cranberry Township following a search initiated after “numerous” firearms were found in his vehicle, state police said Wednesday, July 3.

State police identified the man as 37-year-old Logan Cumberland, who was shot at around 3 p.m. after being found in a wooded area near the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course. State police said officers confronted Cumberland, who was armed with a rifle, and shot him.

Cumberland was the subject of an hourslong search that started at around 10:30 a.m., which also led to police issuing a shelter-in-place order for the Cranberry Township area.

The search for Cumberland began as employees of the golf course came across a disabled vehicle on a private road shortly before 10 a.m., Cranberry Township police Chief Kevin Meyer said during a news conference Tuesday. The man indicated he was having car issues and the workers said he was not speaking coherently, Meyer said.

Golf course employees observed long guns in the vehicle and called police.

When officers arrived, the vehicle was unattended, Meyer said.

A shelter-in-place order for the township was lifted around 3:30 p.m. Multiple police departments, including a Pennsylvania State Police Aviation Unit, responded to the area and assisted in searching for Cumberland. Beaver County Emergency Services Unit/SWAT team also responded to the scene.

The Butler County Coroner’s Office was contacted and responded to the scene Tuesday evening. Autopsy results are pending.

Meyer said Wednesday the Butler County District Attorney’s office works with law enforcement in surrounding counties to address issues that may need more specific officers. According to Meyer, Cranberry Township police contacted the district attorney and Beaver County’s Emergency Services Unit tactical team to alert them to the situation Tuesday.

“There isn’t a solid line, but we give them the best information that we can … they take the necessary command steps,” Meyer said. “They understood the magnitude of this one and acted accordingly; it was all hands on deck.”

State police and the district attorney’s office are continuing the investigation of the shooting, according to state police.
