Butler Art Center hosting celebration show
An upcoming show at the Butler Art Center & Gallery attracted a lot of submissions, maybe because it offers more than $2,000 in cash awards for pieces judged favorably by a jury of artists.
The “Celebration of the Arts” show opens July 14, and it will have on display about 120 pieces submitted by artists from the Butler County area, as well as from Pittsburgh, Ohio and West Virginia.
Shirley McCauley, a board member of the Associated Artists of Butler County, said the show doesn’t have a specific theme, and several mediums will be represented in the show, from paintings to sculptures.
McCauley said the best in show winner will receive $500, and there will be 10 awards of merit that will each receive $100. One of the jurors for the show was Peggi Habets, a Pittsburgh-based watercolor artist, whose work McCauley said has been recognized internationally.
It has been a while since the art center has had a juried show, McCauley said, but the associated artists group wanted to organize one to help drive interest in the art center, even if that interest came from outside Butler County or Pennsylvania.
McCauley said she and the associated artists were happy with the pedigree of the artwork submitted for the show.
“We wanted to expand our reach,” McCauley said. “The quality of artwork was so good that we only rejected a few pieces.”
