CALLERY — After facing several minor complications, a three-year long project to bring a monument honoring local veterans and other longtime borough residents is entering the final stages of completion.

The monument is set to be dedicated at a ceremony on Nov. 10. The borough council approved that date and avoided a possible conflict with Veterans Day during its meeting on Monday, July 1, evening.

Borough Council President Rose Marie Wirtz said the monument will pay considerable homage to those who had a hand in shaping the community.

“The monument is a tribute not only to our veterans and first responders, it’s also a tribute to all the old-timers in Callery who really made this community what it is today,” said Wirtz.

According to Wirtz, the engraved bricks that make up the base of the monument were finally solidified after being redone on three separate occasions because of incorrect lettering. Those bricks were sold to the public as $25 donations to the monument’s construction.

The final step in the process involved the approval of a purchase for a bronze plaque that totaled $684. At the conclusion of Monday’s meeting, the council was still in the process of deciding where exactly that plaque will reside when it is finished.

The Callery Volunteer Fire Department donated a pair of solid concrete benches that sit opposite of one another at the monument’s center. The department will be recognized on the plaque for their donation.

In other business, council decided on the repair of Breakneck Street in the borough. The motion to revitalize the street through a process of tarring and chipping was approved for the amount of $11,835 in favor of an inch-and-a-half of asphalt that would have cost the borough $24,000. The start date for that project is to be announced.
