Remains of missing teen found in Mercer County

Man charged with criminal homicide

A man was charged with criminal homicide after the dismembered remains of a 14-year-old were found in Shenango Lake on June 25.

State police shared in a news release that Hermitage Police Department found the remains “partially in the water” the same day the teenager was reported missing in Sharon.

The last known in-person contact with the victim, 14-year-old Paul Likens Jr., was around 9 p.m. June 22, the news release stated.

According to state police, various dismembered human remains were found at other locations around the lake over the course of the next week. The Mercer County Coroner’s office confirmed the remains as those of the victim, with the cause of death ruled as sharp force trauma to the head.

Evaluation by a forensic pathologist also indicated the victim was dismembered by a cutting instrument, state police shared.

Information from the teenager’s phone provider, social media and video surveillance indicated the victim walked to Budd Street Public Park and Canoe Launch on June 23 around 3 p.m., and seemed to be on his phone and waiting to meet someone near the canoe launch area.

Video surveillance also shows a vehicle leaving and returning to the nearby Riverwalk Apartments in Sharon. The man, identified as DeShawn Watkins, is seen struggling to carry a large duffel bag upon his return. Footage indicates that the next day, Watkins made several trips out of his apartment carrying several bags and garbage bags. Blood was discovered in his apartment, including under the bathroom flooring.

Watkins was charged with criminal homicide and is detained in the Mercer County Jail.
