Construction company prioritizing projects as 1st day of school nears

As the start of the coming school year approaches, construction at the Knoch middle and high schools is continuing in a fashion necessary to prepare for the return of students to the buildings, according to the construction manager.

At the school board meeting Wednesday, June 10, construction manager John Pappas provided an update on the progress and the highest priorities.

“These big items to achieve include getting steel down and paving done,” Pappas said.

During the meeting, the school board approved several change orders related to terra cotta pipe replacement, auditorium roof repair work, landscaping in the courtyard and more.

The most costly of the items approved Wednesday was the decision to replace an eight-inch gas line servicing the high school at a price not to exceed $45,000.

“By replacing this gas line we anticipate there will be no more leaks,” district superintendent David Foley said.

“Some challenges have been faced that were brought up in the spring, but we are pleased with the work of the construction company getting things prepared for the start of the school year,” said Foley.

The presentation Wednesday included photos of the planned expansion, detailing the spaces that will be provided in the new addition. A few sections incorporated into this area include new office space, a new music classroom, second floor restrooms, and second floor science rooms.

The board on Wednesday also discussed the district’s drug testing policy. The current policy allows for random drug tests for student athletes and students with driving permits. This policy was implemented in 2017 and has remained unchanged since.

“We have had students who have tested positive, and we were able to get them help. It’s built in a way that helps the student. The community also has been very supportive of this policy,” said Foley.

They also increased the rate to rent out areas of the schools from $30 to $50 per hour.

Board meetings are held on the first and second Wednesdays of every month. The next meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7.
