Here’s the best place for fans to cheer on Can-Am competitors
Butler County will host the Can-Am Police-Fire Games this week at 15 venues across the county, and fans can cheer on the competitors at certain events.
Casey Hoolahan, who handles public relations for the Butler Tourism & Convention Bureau, said the three most spectator-friendly events are the ice hockey tournament, the toughest competitor alive contest and the submission grappling competition.
The hockey tournament features eight teams in three days of games running from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 19; 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 20; and the gold/silver game at 1 p.m. and the bronze game at 1:20 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at the UPMC Lemeiux Sports Complex, 8000 Cranberry Springs Drive, Cranberry Township.
The submission grappling competition will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, at Morrow Field House, 101 Fieldhouse Road, Slippery Rock. The sport combines elements of wrestling and martial arts. Participants may use takedowns, pins and submission holds to win a match by either accumulating more points than their opponent or by their opponent’s submission.
The toughest competitor alive contest starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at the Aebersold Student Recreation Center, 101 Stadium Drive, Slippery Rock.
The competition includes a 5K run, shot put, 100-meter sprint, a 100-meter swim, rope climb, bench press, pullups and an obstacle course.
Hoolahan said all the events are free and do not require advance registration.
Hoolahan said the shooting and archery competitions and the narcotics dog event only can be viewed by participants and their family members.
“We do have Can-Am Games merchandise on sale at registration at Butler County Community College which runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day,” she said. “Anyone is welcome to buy a T-shirt.”
On-site registration is at Founders Hall on the BC3 campus, 107 College Drive.
Hoolahan said Can-Am Games merchandise is also available at butlercanam2024.com.
