Scialabba

Nickolas Anthony Scialabba, 91, of Butler, passed away Monday, July 22, 2024, at Allegheny General Hospital.

Born June 18, 1933, in Sharpsburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Antonio and Antoinette Randa Scialabba.

Nick’s mother passed away when he was just 6 years old, and then his father was drafted for military service at the height of World War II. Nick and his brothers, Anthony and Carmen, were placed in an orphanage in Philadelphia. Nick’s father was wounded in action while fighting in Germany, which delayed his reunion with his sons for some time, until he completed rehabilitation for his injuries. When the family was reunited, they settled in Butler.

Nick himself was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1952 until 1956.

He was employed at Armco and retired as a supervisor after 40 years of service. For eight years, while working at Armco, he attended night classes at the University of Pittsburgh and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in business.

He was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, and a former member of St. Michael’s Parish council.

Nick was member of VFW Post 249.

A lover of sports, Nick played baseball, softball and golf for many years. He also enjoyed coaching youth baseball and basketball for many years. He formerly served on the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame committee.

Nick enjoyed traveling, playing cards, gardening and spending time with his friends. He always looked forward to gatherings and visits with his loving family.

He is survived by one son, Anthony Scialabba and his wife, Shirley, of Butler; one daughter, Jeanine Sample and her husband, Michael, of Butler; one daughter-in-law, Angelica Scialabba, of North Ridgeville, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Mae Denny Scialabba, whom he married Nov. 24, 1956, and who passed away March 16, 2023; one son, Joseph N. Scialabba, who passed away Jan. 29, 2022; one daughter, Elizabeth Menninger, who passed away March 29, 2024; and his two brothers, Anthony Scialabba and Carmen Scialabba.

The Scialabba family extends a special thank you to the Sergeant Joseph George Kusick Community Living Center at the Butler VA Medical Center for the compassionate, professional care provided to Nick.

SCIALABBA — Friends of Nickolas Anthony Scialabba, who died Monday, July 22, 2024, will be received from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at MARTIN FUNERAL HOME, 429 Center Ave., Butler.

A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at All Saints Parish, St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 Center Ave., Butler, with the Rev. Kevin C. Fazio officiating.

Military honors will be accorded at the church by VFW Post 249, American Legion Post 778 and VFW Post 499.

Burial will take place in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Sisters of Divine Providence, 9000 Babcock Blvd., Allison Park, PA 15101.
