Melvin Tuck

Melvin E. Tuck, 94, of Butler, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2024, at Sunnyview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

He was born Feb. 2, 1930, in Butler, and was the son of the late Benjamin and Frances Tuck.

Melvin grew up in Unionville and at age 19 enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard. He soon went on four years active duty in the 25th Infantry Division. He was stationed in Heilbronn, Germany, where he earned the rank of sergeant first class. He was a member of American Legion and 25th Infantry Division Association.

Melvin served his community as fire chief of Unionville, and on the Center Township zoning board. He was self-employed and operated Tuck’s Garage in Unionville for many years. He was a dealer for Coleman trailers and Polaris Snowmobiles. He also became known as an oval dirt track race driver and car builder. He ran successfully in the hardtop coupe division at area and tri-state tracks and eventually upgraded to sprint cars where he too won many races. Engines that he built endured 100-lap events without fail. He was also a fan of the Indianapolis 500. He and family members attended that event for 35 years. He enjoyed NASCAR, hunting and boating as well.

On Nov. 10, 1950, he married Marilyn M. Patterson and they shared 69 years until her passing in 2019. He is survived by two daughters, Pam Tuck of Unionville and Tamara Ferry of York, S.C.; a son, Garry (Eileen) Tuck of East Butler; and three grandsons, Ryan Tuck, Eric Tuck and Joshua Ferry. He is also survived by a sister, June Johnston of Butler; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John and Norman “Dick” Tuck; and a sister, Diana McAnallen.
