SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — The Slippery Rock Area School District school board voted Monday, July 29, to terminate a professional employee, a decision that was discussed in an executive session before the meeting.

All eight school board members at the meeting Monday voted in favor of the motion. Alfonso Angelucci, superintendent of Slippery Rock Area School District, said after the meeting there were no details on the employee who was up for a vote Monday. Mike Hnath, solicitor for Slippery Rock Area School District, also said after the meeting the district is “still in the process” of deciding how to fill the role of the terminated employee.

Josh Wise, of Harmony, said in public comment he was disappointed with the language of the agenda, which said “possible disciplinary action” regarding an employee. He also said he appreciated a conversation he had with Angelucci before the meeting, but if nothing came of the board’s consideration of action, there would be “a whole lot of disappointment.”

“I really hope you guys got the right motion in your hearts tonight,” Wise said.

The school board also recognized the boys track team with a resolution, and accepted a proclamation from state Rep. Tim Bonner, R-17th. The high school’s track and field team was the PIAA Class 2A champion in May at Shippensburg University, tallying 41 points to earn the championship, with Penn Cambria finishing in a distant second with 25 points.

Angelucci said the championship win by the team was the first state title the high school has won since 1968, the year the rifle team took home the state championship. Several members of the team attended the school board meeting Monday to accept the recognitions.

Brie Simons, the athletic director of Slippery Rock Area School District, also announced the team’s head coach, Tom Meling, was named the 2024 Pennsylvania Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Simons also said the school district planned to order commemorative rings for the students on the team.

“It’s something we’re very proud of; you’ve made all of us very proud,” Angelucci said.
