Trash pickup to cease in Clay Township at end of 2024
As a result of the impending closure of the Northwest Sanitary Landfill in the West Sunbury area, trash pickup will no longer be available in Clay Township.
In a letter to residents posted to the township’s website in mid-June, the township wrote that it will no longer provide trash pickup after the landfill closes.
“It will now be (residents’) responsibility to make other arrangements for garbage/recycling services,” the letter reads.
The landfill, operated by Waste Management, will close no later than the end of 2024, although the company has not set an exact closure date. A spokesperson from Waste Management told the Butler Eagle the landfill has reached its maximum capacity.
The letter added that Waste Management still will operate a transfer station in the township even after the closure of the landfill.
Waste Management is in the closing stages of a deal to sell a 660-acre portion of the landfill’s property to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, who will, in turn, sell that portion off to the Pennsylvania Game Commission for preservation.
