Seneca Valley to set new policies regarding AI
JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley School District is expected to codify new policies regarding use of artificial intelligence technology for students and teachers during its regular school board meeting Monday, Aug. 12.
At its monthly work session Monday, Aug. 5, the school board approved the first reading of an update to an existing policy and a new policy adapted from Pennsylvania School Board Association recommendations.
The board plans to update policy 815, “Acceptable Use of Internet,” to include new language regarding the use of artificial intelligence. while also incorporating policy 815.1, “Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Education.”
“The updated one is about the responsible use of artificial intelligence,” said Matt McKinley, the district’s assistant superintendent. “The new one helps us define a lot of the terms of artificial intelligence and really backs up that first policy.”
The current policy 815 defines acceptable and unacceptable uses of the internet, email, and computer software, and outlines punishments for violating the policy. It was implemented in April 1996 and last updated in November 2018.
The new and updated policies on generative AI will be made available on the BoardDocs page on Seneca Valley’s website shortly after they are approved next week.
