After a day of soggy weather which derailed part of the event Saturday, the 25th annual Moraine Regatta was blessed with perfect weather and was able to get back on track on Sunday, Aug. 4.
One volunteer said the rain had little impact on Saturday’s activities, aside from a brief spell of thunder and lightning.
“Once it thundered, we had to hold off on having people in the water, but then, it cleared up and we had a beautiful evening,” said volunteer Tammy May. “The fireworks went off, and everything was beautiful.”
May says that 6,400 people came through the gates Saturday.
The Moraine Regatta offered something for everyone on Saturday and Sunday: everything from archery to kayaking to yoga, and even (on Saturday only) axe throwing.
One attraction which garnered significant attention Sunday was the LifeFlight helicopter, which touched down in a grassy area next to a grassy parking lot in the afternoon. It is one of the six helicopters in the Allegheny Health Network fleet.
“We're actually in service right now,” said flight nurse Greg Parker. “We can respond from here if they need us.”
Many youngsters got their first taste of fishing during the Moraine regatta over the weekend, thanks to a program offered by Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Wildlife Resources. First, the children tried out their rods in a simulated “lake” with plastic fish laid out in a grassy area. Then they took their rods to a section of Lake Arthur to try out fishing “for reel.”
“A lot of them are first time fishers, so it doesn't hurt to give them practice,” said volunteer Alex Belvack. “People get nibbles there all the time.”
