Ohio man arrested following police chase into Cranberry Township

An Ohio man was arrested Sunday, Aug. 4, after police said he rammed a Pennsylvania Turnpike exit gate while leading officers on a chase from Ohio into Cranberry Township in a stolen vehicle.

Makele E. Scruggs, 23, of Cleveland, was charged with felonies receiving stolen property, criminal mischief and fleeing police, misdemeanor reckless endangerment and four summary traffic citations. He was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $150,000 bail.

A trooper from the Gibsonia state police barracks, which patrols the Turnpike, said he was notified the Ohio State Highway Patrol was in pursuit of a stolen Ford Expedition traveling east on the Ohio Turnpike toward Pennsylvania.

Troopers intercepted the vehicle at mile marker 9 while it was traveling at a high rate of speed with the Ohio officers still in pursuit. After traveling several miles and passing numerous vehicle using the berm, the vehicle exited the Pennsylvania Turnpike at mile marker 24.6, in Cranberry Township. The vehicle then used the access road at the exit and rammed the electric access gate to exit the Turnpike, police said.

The vehicle kept traveling to Powell Road and turned left on Glenn Eden Road where it struck a guardrail and became disabled along the side of the road, against a Turnpike fence, police said.

A man fled the vehicle on foot, ran onto the Turnpike and crossed over into a field and wooded area, managing to elude troopers who were chasing him on foot, police said. A short time later, the man, later identified at Scruggs, was seen walking in the area.
