Virtual program aims to help those with Parkinson’s disease

In September and October, the American Parkinson Disease Association will launch an eight-week support series and introduction to Parkinson’s disease for Pittsburgh area residents diagnosed in the last five years and their care partners.

The Parkinson’s Roadmap for Education and Support Services program will meet virtually at 10 a.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 10 to Oct. 29. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.

The program is specially designed for people within five years of a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis and their care partners. The eight-week program will be conducted in a support group format and aims to help attendees feel empowered and optimistic by providing emotional support, education, and a comfortable space to share coping strategies. The program will be facilitated by Martine Saul, Licensed Professional Counselor.

PRESS is an APDA signature program. The topics for each session include:

– What’s next after diagnosis

– Medication management of Parkinson’s disease

– Importance of exercise in Parkinson’s disease

– Dealing with physical symptoms of Parkinson’s disease

– Impact of Parkinson’s on daily coping and relationships

– Tips for daily living

– Caring for others, caring for yourself

– Building your health care team

Registration is open now. Space is limited and a commitment to attend all eight sessions is requested. Register by calling 412-254-3509, or emailing mes@orendacc.com.
