Child injured in hit-and-run crash in Harmony

An 8-year-old child sustained minor injuries and spent a night in a hospital as a result of a hit-and-run crash on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at North Pittsburgh Street and Highland Avenue in Harmony.

The incident occurred while the boy was riding bicycles with several other children as part of a “triathlon camp” at Zelienople Community Park, operated by Get Fit Families.

“We have a camp at Zelienople Community Park that we do all summer,” said Joella Baker, who runs Get Fit Families in Harmony. “It’s a triathlon camp that we hold throughout the summer at Zelie Park.”

According to eyewitnesses and camera footage that has surfaced publicly, the boy was struck by a white sedan, although the exact make and model of the vehicle remains unknown. The footage was shot by a camera belonging to the Harmony-Zelienople Global Methodist Church on North Pittsburgh Street.

Zelienople police Chief James A. Miller said the department could not release much information as officers are still investigating, and could not identify the boy who was struck. Miller said the boy is recovering.

“From what I understand, the boy’s going to be OK,” Miller said. “I think he’s already returned home from the hospital.”

Ginger Leonberg said she was coming home from a nearby Walgreens and passed by Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School, when she came across a crowd standing in the middle of the street.

“There was a lady standing in the middle of the road telling me to stop,” said Leonberg, who did not witness the incident. “I saw a little boy laying in the middle of the road, and there was a young man on the sidewalk on a phone calling 911. I waited a few minutes, because I thought, maybe he just fell off his bike. I got out, and they said he just got hit by a car.”

Leonberg said bystanders moved the boy onto the grass as they waited for the ambulance from Harmony EMS to arrive.

“He was shaking and crying, and he was banged up,” Leonberg said. “He was coherent and everything ... He was just shaking.”

Baker did not see the incident either, as she was trailing other athletes on her bike and was told about the collision by another participant.

The exact extent of the boy’s injuries has not been released.
