Eagle honors farming family with award

The Beacom Family — Kevin, Amy, Rachel and Craig — took home the 71st Annual Eagle Bowl Farm Family Award at the Butler Farm Show on Friday evening, Aug. 9. Holly Mead/Special to the Eagle

Sometimes the stories told by the Butler Eagle require us to dive deep, do hours of research, make so many phone calls, send countless emails, but other times they’re right out there on display for us at places like the Butler Farm Show.

For us here at the Butler Eagle, the coverage that highlights our farming community is important.

We joined the community last Sunday for the kickoff ceremony before then having staff writers or photographers out at the Connoquenessing Township venue nearly every day.

On Thursday, Eagle staff writer Irina Bucur told the story of children showing off their animals at the Junior Livestock Auction. On Friday, another staff writer, Hunter Muro wrote about the Eagle Bowl winners, the family that the Butler Eagle presents an award to annually. This year, we had the honor of presenting the Eagle Bowl to the Beacom family of Tarentum.

The Butler Farm Show has long been a favorite event in Butler County for many of our staff members, presenting the silver Eagle Bowl to this deserving local farming family is always an honor for us.

At the annual Butler Farm Show, the hard work that goes into farming is on display. We know that there are no days off for farmers — memories of Christmas mornings will forever include trips to the barn to ensure all the animals are fed. Those trips happen no matter how cold it is outside. Easter may be derailed as baby goats make a surprise debut.

Family vacations just aren't on the calendar for many farming families. Their farms come first.

This year's Eagle Bowl went to a family that exemplifies the resilience that farming requires, the patience the field demands and the commitment their community relies on. The Beacom family is that and so much more. Congratulations.
