Ryan Pinkerton wins Butler Eagle County Amateur golf tournament at Slippery Rock Golf Club

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Ryan Pinkerton thought his day was done, but he had a few more clutch swings to take.

The resident of Chicora carded an even-par 70 in Sunday’s Butler Eagle Amateur golf tournament at Slippery Rock Golf Club.

“I didn’t think that would be good enough to win,” he said. “I was putting my clubs in my car when someone told me there was a tie for first place and I needed to get to a playoff hole.”

In fact, there was a 5-way tie for first. Xander Downing, Logan Pistorius, Troy Loughry, Nathan Hoshak and Pinkerton each had managed par on 18 regulation holes.

Loughry, who was two-time defending champion, had already left and was unable to return to the course in time to take part in the playoff.

The remaining foursome set out on hole No. 1, a 407-yard par 4.

Pinkerton and Pistorius parred the hole, something Hoshak and Downing were unable to match.

Pinkerton then tallied five strokes to par No. 2 and won the overall championship when Pistorius carded a bogey.

“I left my approach shot to the front right of the green, about 30 feet from the hole,” Pinkerton said. “I chipped onto the green, then two-putted.”

Chloe Fritch, a senior at Karns City High, shot an 81 to win the women’s title for the second straight year.

Pinkerton had golfed in the amateur a number of times before. He was part of a record 183 golfers in Sunday’s tournament.

“I finished in the top 10 a couple of times, but things never really came together for me,” he said. “It was a good nine, bad nine deal. But today, my short game was on. I was able to chip really well and got up and down to make up for some bad shots.

“I didn’t think 70 would be good enough and it feels incredible to win.”

Pistorius, of Parker, also was runner-up in the 2022 event at Hiland Golf Course.

“I’m proud of the way I golfed today,” he said. “It’s tough to break par on this course.”

Fritch, who beat out Mary Twentier by one stroke for the women’s title, is coming off a torn ACL suffered last January during the high school basketball season. She had to wear a brace during her morning round Sunday.

“I’m used to wearing it and it’s comfortable for me,” she said. “The injury to my (right) knee has actually helped my golf game. It’s made me take a step back and look at my game.

“I still can’t swing as hard, but when you swing hard, there’s a better chance of you hitting a draw or fade. I’m focusing on just hitting the ball straight and going from there.”

Her victory gives Fritch a springboard into the upcoming high school season. She hopes to claim a second straight District 9 championship for Karns City.

“I didn’t put pressure on myself today,” she said. “Other golfers here have been able to get a lot more practice time in.”

Chris Kukla won the senior division with a 72.

This was the 30th straight year for the Eagle Amateur. Rob Voltz, a tournament committee member, has been golfing in the event for three decades, missing just a few along the way.

“This tournament really has stood the test of time,” he said. “We’ve consistently been getting over 160 golfers and that’s more than any PGA event, so we’re happy with that.”
