Kelly’s task force requests documents from Secret Service, FBI, DHS
In one of its first acts since forming last month, the 13-member task force chaired by Congressman Mike Kelly, R-16th, has requested a series of documents from multiple U.S. government agencies regarding the rally in Butler County where former President Donald Trump was shot on July 13.
Letters have been addressed to Alejandro Mayorkas, Department of Homeland Security secretary; Ronald Rowe, the acting director of the Secret Service, Attorney General Merrick Garland; and Christopher Wray, director of the FBI, requesting documents and information on the events that led to the shooting which left one spectator dead and two others seriously injured.
In addition, the task force is requesting a briefing to review all four agencies’ responses to Congress since the assassination attempt, and are hoping to hold this briefing no later than Friday, Aug. 16.
The 13-member task force, which consists of seven Republicans and six Democrats, was established July 24 after a resolution sponsored by Kelly was passed by a 416-0 vote in the House.
The task force is one of several bodies tasked with investigating the assassination attempt, including some of the agencies it is asking for information. Unlike others, the task force has the power to issue subpoenas if necessary. The task force has been given a deadline of Dec. 13 to submit a final report on its findings.
