A Butler man was charged with assaulting a 3-year-old boy Friday, Aug. 9, at the Butler Farm Show in Connoquenessing Township.

Gary L. Fend Jr., 45, was charged by state police with felony endangering the welfare of children and misdemeanors simple assault and harassment after an alleged incident witnessed by a vendor and another man.

Police said the vendor reported he saw Fend slap the boy in the face twice using unreasonable force. The vendor also reported that Fend pushed the boy back into a stroller, causing the stroller to collapse, police said.

The trooper who responded said he saw red marks on the left side of the boy’s face and a small mark behind his left ear, and said the boy was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for an evaluation due to suspected chest pain.

Fend was arraigned Friday and was released from the Butler County Prison on Saturday after posting $10,000 bail.
