Mars to unveil mascot

ADAMS TWP — Mars Area School District will unveil its first-ever mascot this weekend with just a few days left of summer break.

Courtenay Carrel, president of the Mars Cheer Boosters, announced the big reveal to come during a school board meeting Tuesday, Aug. 13. The organization took charge of the initiative, with designs and drawings being presented to the board since October.

The mascot will be revealed to the public at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Mars Athletic Complex during the district’s Friday Night Lineup, she said. The free event, previously known as Meet the Planets, will introduce the football team, cheerleaders, band and dance team.

“That’s where we unveil it to the whole community, and then from there, we can really work on its name and some of the things that it does for the community, whether it’s school openings, or, you know, back to school nights — that type of stuff as well,” Carrel said.

“We hope for it to be a part of the whole night and hopefully build some momentum for the whole season,” she said.

Board president John Kennedy said board directors have seen sketches of the mascot, but the final look will be a surprise. Carrel said the Cheer Boosters have been working on drawings since October. The mascot was approved by the school board at no cost to the district and was paid for through fundraising efforts and donations.

“(The mascot) should be in our hands tomorrow and ready to unveil to the public,” Carrel told the school board.

Carrel noted that the mascot was not a “simple one,” like a tiger or a lion, and the costume was not something that could be bought online.

As far as she and board directors know, this will be the district’s first mascot.

“We went all in,” Carrel said before the meeting. “If we were going to do it, we wanted to do it right.”
