History center unveils iconic baseball uniform

The Heinz History Center has unveiled a rare uniform from the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in their new exhibition, “A Woman’s Place: How Women Shaped Pittsburgh,” which opened in March.

The uniform, on loan from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, belonged to Betsy Jochum of the South Bend, Ind., Blue Sox, according to a news release.

More than 600 girls and women competed in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball league between 1943 and 1954 and attracted almost one million paying fans at its peak in 1948.

Jochum was one such player. One of the original 60 players in the league, she spent her five-year career (1943-1948) with the Blue Sox as an outfielder, but she also pitched. Jochum often led for the Blue Sox, and amassed 354 stolen bases, including seven in one game.

The Blue Sox uniform will join Jochum’s baseball glove, cleats and other artifacts from the Smithsonian and featured in the women’s sports section of the exhibition. The objects will be on view until the exhibition closes on Oct. 6.
