Crawford County man sentenced to prison for Megan’s Law violation

A Meadville man was given a prison sentence Thursday, Aug. 15, in Butler County Common Pleas Court for not complying with Megan’s Law reporting requirements imposed after he was convicted of a sexual assault offense in Erie County in 2001.

Bruce E. Peters, 64, was sentenced to serve 40 months to 108 months in state prison after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of failing to verify his address filed by state police in January 2023.

Police went to a home on Dessa Lane in Concord Township where Peters was supposed to be living in October and December 2022 to investigate a report that he failed to notify police about a change of his address, according to an affidavit. His last reported address was that house as of Jan. 20, 2022, police said.

On the second visit, the person who lived there told troopers she did not know Peters and he didn’t live there, police said.

A person convicted of a sex-related crime under Megan’s Law is required to report his address and other information and be photographed.

Peters was convicted of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse in 2001 in Erie County and was given a lifetime reporting requirement under Megan’s Law, according to court and Megan’s Law records. His Megan’s Law registration began on Jan. 21, 2009.

At that time, Peters lived in Clarendon in Warren County. The Girard Police Department in Erie County arrested him and charged him with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and corruption of minors on Jan. 27, 2001, according to court records.

Judge Joseph Kubit sentenced Peters on Thursday.
