Butler County locales receive more than $650,000 in transportation grants from state

Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office announced Monday a block of more than $650,000 in transportation funding grants is to be awarded to four Butler County municipalities — Clinton and Forward townships, Mars and Zelienople.

This makes up a small percentage of the more than $51 million in grants from the Multimodal Transportation Fund awarded Monday, which will be directed to funding transportation infrastructure projects across 32 counties.

“Infrastructure is critical to our Commonwealth's progress and our ability to complete major projects is key to spurring economic growth and create real opportunity,” Shapiro said in a news release. “Investing in and improving our infrastructure is a common-sense way to spur economic development, create jobs and help Pennsylvanians reach their destinations safely and efficiently.”

Clinton Township received the biggest prize — $408,362 for the resurfacing of Monks, Spring Valley and Anderson roads. Mars received $151,868 for the reconstruction of Spring Avenue.

“We're trying to replace Spring Avenue and get it totally reconditioned,” said Mars Mayor Gregg Hartung. “So this is very good news.”

Zelienople received $72,240 to install a pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Main and Spring streets, while Forward Township received $44,076 to install guide rails on Spithaler School and Leslie roads.

For the municipalities that missed out on grant funding this time around, PennDOT will be accepting applications for the next round of grants starting Sept. 23, with applications due at 4 p.m. Nov. 5. The recipients of these grants should be announced in July 2025.
