New mascot is an out-of-this-world hit

After months of wondering, now we know. The mascot for the Mars Area School District’s Fightin’ Planets is ... a Fightin’ Planet, specifically Mars in boxing gloves, shorts and tennis shoes.

The red, round representation of the school district made its debut Sunday, Aug. 18, during the district’s Friday Night Lineup, but the brainchild of the Mars Cheer Boosters is intended to make stop at countless district sporting events and at some community events ahead.

The mascot, on Sunday, added a little extra suspense, as its final identity wasn’t revealed until that evening at the community event, which also introduced the football team, cheerleaders, dance team and band.

It was “awesome,” first-grader Ben Wisser said.

We learned that the district has had mascots in the past, but none that have stuck around.

We are hopeful that the months of planning and fundraising, the time spent building buy-in for the new mascot and the excitement around its arrival will keep the Fightin’ Planet orbiting around the Mars Area School District.

The Mars Cheer Boosters wanted to do it right, and the reaction Sunday from those at the event indicates the group was successful in its mission. As the Fightin’ Planet ran onto the field, the crowd cheered. People stopped to offer the planet fist bumps and smiled in pictures with the mascot.

The district intends to host a naming contest, where students can pitch ideas for the currently nameless mascot.

We look forward to learning the mascot’s name and seeing the red planet in spaces all around Mars Area School District.

We applaud those who came up with and brought to fruition the idea. It’s out of this world.
