Butler Township recreation field soon open for use

The recreation field being built by Butler Township near Pullman Center Business Park is almost ready to begin scheduling.

The Butler Township commissioners voted Monday, Aug. 19, to set the cost to rent the field at $55 per hour or $600 for one day. Butler Township manager Tom Knights said the artificial turf field with markings for several sports, including soccer and football, may be ready for public use after Labor Day. While construction is ongoing at the planned recreation complex on pieces like the parking lot and concession stand, Knights said the field is about ready to use.

Knights said the rental rate suggested for use of the field is based on the amount it would cost to replace artificial turf in about 10 years, which is currently estimated to be about $870,000.

“Long-range goal is that in 10 years — the useful life of the artificial turf — that we’re in a position to replace it,” Knights said.

Butler Township Commissioner Ed Natale said he has been to the field a few times since it was installed and is happy with its quality.

“I’ve walked out to the middle of the field, along the edges,” he said. “It’s very nice. It’s going to be a very nice facility.”

Knights said that for now, the township office will be the point of contact for people who want to rent the field.
