Saxonburg man identified in fatal Jefferson Township motorcycle-bus crash
The motorcyclist who died Wednesday, Aug. 21, after colliding with a school bus carrying about 20 elementary school students from Knoch School District has been identified as a 79-year-old Saxonburg man.
Gary Welsh died following the crash, which happened at around 4:16 p.m. at the intersection of Dinnerbell and Victory roads in Jefferson Township.
The Butler County Coroner’s Office identified Welsh as the motorcyclist on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, Welsh stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Dinnerbell and Victory roads before turning right onto Dinnerbell Road.
Police said he crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, where the school bus, traveling westward in the opposite direction, was unable to stop.
After impact, the bus traveled about 30 feet, dragging the motorcycle under the front bumper and Welsh under the bus, the crash report said.
The school bus sustained moderate damage, police said.
The students and the bus driver were uninjured in the crash, according to the Knoch superintendent.
Saxonburg Volunteer Company also responded to the scene.
