Slippery Rock Area High School has received a $3,000 dollar grant to support mental health resources and improve suicide awareness programs.

The high school was one of eight schools to receive grants from the Chuckie F. Mahoney Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization that seeks to empower students and parents with mental health resources and education.

“Reaching young people is such a fulfilling part of our mission, and we’re proud to equip their teachers and schools with tools to help kids build confidence and learn coping strategies to improve their mental health,” Foundation president Charles “Chal” Mahoney said in a recent news release.

The Chuckie F. Memorial Foundation was started after Mahoney and his wife, Debi Mahoney, lost their son to suicide.

Originally started as a college scholarship in 2002, the Foundation now provides resources for students and parents across the region.

The Foundation’s work aims to improve students’ mental health, combat depression, and remove the stigma surrounding treatment.
