Mars football, led by Gabe Hein electrifying 300-yard game, beats Boone in Florida
No single player had a better start to the 2024 high school football season than Mars receiver Gabe Hein.
The junior, who has already garnered college recruiting interest, torched Boone (Fla.) for 330 yards and three touchdowns on nine receptions Saturday morning in the Fightin’ Planets’ 47-35 road win in Florida.
Hein caught his first touchdown at the end of the first quarter, breaking away for an 80-yard score that made it 19-14 Mars. He caught an 84-yard TD midway through the second quarter, then hauled in a 30-yard score in the fourth quarter to put the Planets ahead for good 41-28.
It was an excellent offensive performance all around for the visiting team, which had to wait 14 hours for the start of its season after the game was postponed Friday night due to weather.
Quarterback Luke Goodworth went 10 of 15 passing for 365 yards and five TDs, also hitting Mason Childress for an 80-yard TD and Ethan Kresinski for a 8-yarder. Running back Eric Kasperowicz Jr. ran 18 times for 120 yards and two scores; he also had a pair of two-point conversions.
Summit Academy 20, Frazier 16 — Demetris Crosby scored rushing touchdowns from 69 yards out and 13 yards out as the Knights (1-0) snapped a 17-game skid. Anthony Hammond also had a two-yard ground score.
Girls Volleyball
Senior setter Zoey Pankratz had 41 assists and Marissa Metzka, Adison Novad and CJ Sabo each had nine kills as Slippery Rock beat Moniteau in straight sets on Saturday. The scores of the match were 25-23, 25-14 and 25-16.
The Warriors were paced by Bella Hernandez, who had four aces and a pair of kills.
Boys Soccer
Mason Anderson and Thomas Sheptak both had two goals and an assist, Michael Roman and Maddox McCall also added tallies and Butler beat Slippery Rock, 6-1, on Saturday.
Noah Ernst, Chris Rubcic and Ryan Conaway each had an assist for the Golden Tornado.
Freeport 8, St. Joseph’s 1 — Angelo Porco deposited four goals and Carson Rowley, Eli Hassler, Spencer Valasek and TJ Clark scored in the Yellowjackets’ romp, too.
Fairview 5, Knoch 0 — No further results were provided for the Saturday matchup.
Mars 2, Fairview 1 — Luke Hagan shined in goal for the Planets in the victory on Friday.
Mars 2, Allderdice 0 — Zach Angoff and Cam Osterman scored and Ela Staslowski had a clean sheet in the Saturday win.
Girls Soccer
North Catholic 3, Karns City 0 — Following a 2-1 win over Indiana on Friday, the Gremlins couldn’t get anything on the board against the Trojanettes on Saturday. Karns City is back in action on Tuesday at Punxsutawney.
Mars 6, Knoch 0 — The Planets kicked off Mars SoccerFest on Saturday by pouring in five goals in the second half of a shutout win.
Mars 3, Kiski Area 1 — The Planets improved to 2-0 with a win over the Cavaliers.
