The “dog days” of summer are almost over, but Monday, Aug. 26 was National Dog Day, and Lowrie Place in Butler celebrated the occasion in style with a doggy costume contest.

The senior living community gave out prizes to the dogs with the four best costumes on Monday afternoon. Ten dogs were entered in the contest for a small price.

“Anybody who entered the contest was supposed to bring a treat or a toy or something for the Humane Society,” said Carol Warner, director of resident programming at Lowrie Place. “We have some local businesses who have donated prizes.”

First prize in the contest went to Star, a dog dressed in a bumblebee suit, owned by Tracy Stewart and her son, Jackson.

Second prize went to a dog wearing a “Despicable Me” Minions costume, owned by Cindy Naughton.
