Bruce Springsteen shuts down retirement chatter at Philadelphia show
NEW YORK — Age and medical setbacks are not sending the Boss into retirement any time soon: Bruce Springsteen recently assured fans he has no plans to retire.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, who turns 75 next month, put the rumors to rest that he was throwing in the towel to a decadeslong career during his latest tour stop.
“We’ve been around 50 ... years and we ain’t quitting!” he informed the sold out audience at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia last weekend.
“No farewell tour for the E Street Band!” Springsteen assured concert goers in fan footage that circulated on social media this week.
He continued: “Hell no ... Farewell to what? Thousands of people screaming your name? Yeah, I wanna quit that. That’s it. That’s all it takes. I ain’t goin’ anywhere.”
Last September, the “Born in the USA” hitmaker postponed a number of concert dates to receive treatment for peptic ulcer disease. Also known as PUD, the fairly common condition occurs when open sores accumulate in the lining of the stomach or small intestine.
“Thank you for your understanding and support,” he wrote at the time, expressing how he and the E Street Band were “heartbroken” for the necessary pause in performances. “We’ve been having a blast at our U.S. shows and we’re looking forward to more great times. We’ll be back soon.”
The 20-time Grammy winner, who recently achieved billionaire status, resumed touring in March but ended up suspending European concert dates under “doctor’s directions” in late May.
He and the E Street Band are scheduled to headline the 2024 Sea. Hear. Now Festival on Sept. 15 in his hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey.
