High school sports roundup: Katelyn VanDyke shines in Karns City win; Freeport, Butler volleyball sweep
Katelyn VanDyke scored twice and dished out two assists in Karns City girls soccer’s 6-0 shutout of Redbank Valley. The Gremlins (3-1) also got two goals from Hanna Dailey, plus an assist, and goals from Aubrey Price and Phoebe Brandon.
Mars shut out Kiski 5-0, getting two goals from Miles Frazier. Eli Stasiowski and Luke Hagen combined in net for the shutout.
Indiana 4, Knoch 3 – Will Schwalm scored a goal and dished out an assist to Austin Friedline in Thursday’s home loss. Will Parisi scored on a penalty kick.
Alaina Whitlinger’s 12 kills, three blocks and 11 service points paced Freeport to a 3-0 sweep of host Deer Lakes.
Jayme Radvan added six kills and four blocks, Leah Schreckengost six kills and Payton Woods five kills in the win, which came by scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-12.
Freeport will compete Saturday at the Franklin Regional Tournament.
Butler 3, Laurel 0 – Audrey Lehman had 11 kills and Raina Lewandowski had 10 kills and three aces in the Golden Tornado’s sweep. Set scores were 25-16, 25-18, 25-20.
North Clarion 3, Moniteau 2 – The Warriors couldn’t hang on to 2-1 set led. North Clarion rallied to win by set scores of 25-14, 20-25, 9-25, 25-17, 15-13. Bella Hernandez had eight kills, two blocks and two aces for Moniteau, while Emily Matz had five kills and five aces.
Pine-Richland 3, Mars 1 – Lily Javor had a double-double of 10 kills and 16 digs in the Planets’ loss (set scores: 25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 25-17). Cecilia Christy added five kills and eight blocks.
Titusville 3, A-C Valley 0 – The Falcons lost by scores of 25-10, 25-15, 25-10, with no stats reported.
Butler held on to beat Seneca Valley in a tight match at Hiland Golf Course on Thursday 187-197. The Golden Tornado got a low round of 45 from Macie McLister, while Madi Wolfe shot a 46 and Rylin Barbe a 49.
Pine-Richland topped Mars 179-187, as the Planets got scores of 43 from Elise Wadas, 45 from Makenna Myler and 48 from Susanna Tomkovicz.
Boden Lenyk and Levi McClellan shot the top two rounds of the day as Butler boys golf fended off Seneca Valley 186-195 in a nine-hole match at Slippery Rock Golf Club. Lenyk shot a 34 and McClellan a 35, while Blake Scott chipped in a 39 for the Golden Tornado (4-4, 3-4). The Raiders were led by Tyler Garvin, Marcos Lopez and Anthony Cardosi, who all shot 38.

Drake Kreutz’s 86 led Slippery Rock in Thursday’s Region 2 match at Oak Tree Golf Course. His score tied for seventh, with Wilmington’s Santino Toscano shooting the day’s low round, 75. SRHS finished sixth in the seven-team match and sits in the same place this season with eight points. Hickory leads with 32.

Seneca Valley swept Shaler 5-0 to improve to 4-2 (2-1 section). Alaina Brody won her Singles 1 battle in straight sets over Grace Grabowski 6-4, 6-2. Sydney Blucher was pushed to a third set in Singles 2 but beat Alexis Frisbee 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
