Summer may be coming to a close, but there are still plenty of things to do at Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks this September.

Wednesday

Moraine State Park is holding a “Wetlands & Wildlife Paddle” at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, where visitors will learn about the wetlands at Moraine and the wildlife that call them home. Meet at the Old Route 422 launch by the Region 2 office. A limited number of kayaks are available, but participants can bring their own. Life jackets are required. This event is open to ages 12 and older; those younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Sept. 5

Join the park naturalist for a night hike starting at 8 p.m. from Pavilion No. 7 at the McDanel’s launch area on the North Shore at Moraine and discover the creatures that go bump in the night. Note: You may want to bring a flashlight for this one.

Sept. 7

Teach your child how to fish or learn how to do it yourself at the Family Fishing Program, held at the Bear Run Boat Launch at Moraine starting at 9 a.m. No fishing license is required to attend this event, and all fishing equipment will be provided.

Sept. 14

All local Girl Scouts are called to celebrate the wonders of the outdoors during the “Girl Scouts Love McConnells Mill” event starting at 9:30 a.m. Attendees will meet at the Kildoo Picnic Area. Activities will last for five hours, so bringing a lunch is recommended.

Sept. 28-29

McConnells Mill is celebrating its 31st annual Heritage Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 28 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 29. Visitors will get the chance to see live demonstrations of the park’s historic gristmill, visit a Civil War encampment, and witness live demonstrations from artists and craftspeople. This event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Portersville-Prospect. Parking and admission are both free.
