Sept. 2 has been “summer’s last hurrah” for more than 100 years in Hermitage.

Buhl Day originated as a tribute to philanthropists and prominent Sharon residents Frank H. and Julia Buhl. The Buhls’ 270-acre farm is now a community green space with recreation areas, lake, trails and a golf course. And on Buhl Day, the space hosts a celebration with music, food, car cruise, kids’ activities, vendors and more.

On Buhl Day morning, crowds line State Street for the annual parade from downtown Hermitage to Buhl Farm Park. But before the parade begins, more than 100 people charge down the parade route in the annual Buhl Day 5K. The race, which starts at 9 a.m. on Labor Day Monday, has run the parade route for more than 20 years.

It’s hosted by The Buhl Club, a community center in Sharon first opened in 1903. The club eventually merged with a women’s club founded by Julia Buhl and has continued to “provide quality recreational, social, fitness and educational programs for people of all ages.”

Director of Operations Michelle Bower said the race is one of many fitness fundraising events held throughout the year. Proceeds from the 5K provide assistance and access to club programs for all who wish to participate regardless of cost.

The Buhl Day 5K is a flat, fast, point-to-point course. Participants may park downtown near the start. A shuttle is provided for the return from Buhl Farm Park. Participants from runners and walkers to kids in strollers and dogs on leashes are welcome.

The 5K offers awards for top three male and female finishers and top three in age groups from 9-and-under through 70-plus. On Sept. 7 a popular race appears at an unusual date and time. The All Saints Parish 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run starts at 9 a.m. at St. Conrad’s Church in Meridian.

Originally scheduled as a twilight run in July, the event was postponed following the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump at Butler’s Farm Show grounds. Most of the 5K and mile courses run through those grounds.

Father Kevin Fazio, race director and head priest at All Saints Parish, said the race will still be enjoyable. They worked with the Farm Show and community to reschedule for Sept. 7 but vow the event will return to a Friday evening in late July 2025.

He said there’s a uniqueness of running in the twilight. Because it’s a morning run and walk, post-race food will have a breakfast theme, with breakfast sandwiches, fruit and drinks. All in attendance, including spectators, can share the food free of charge.

Fazio, a runner himself, called the course flat and fast. The top three male and female finishers, first masters, and top three in age groups from under-10 through over-60 earn awards. In the one-mile event, the top three overall and top three in age groups from under-4 through 13-14 earn awards. Proceeds from the event benefit All Saints Parish and the Sarah Kasunic/ Emily Leyland Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship, awarded to current and prospective Butler Catholic School students, is provided in memory of the former students who died in a car accident and leukemia, respectively.

Online registration for All Saints Parish 5K and 1 Mile is open until noon Tuesday. Day of event sign-up is open on Sept. 7 from 7-8:15 a.m. at St. Conrad’s Church in Meridian.
