Saxonburg residents got their first glimpse at the police department’s new K-9 officer, Bolt, on Wednesday and Thursday at South Butler Community Library. Bolt’s handler, police officer Mark Heider, showed him to the public in celebration of National Dog Month.

A large crowd of children came out to greet Bolt, the first K-9 officer on the Saxonburg Police Department’s force in over a decade. Bolt, a German shepherd, officially was sworn in last month, and was previously at neighboring Middlesex Township Police Department. He is specifically trained to sniff out narcotics.

As part of the event, children who visited the library made “puppy puppets.”
