Cranberry Township reopens bids for fiber-optic expansion

CRANBERRY TWP — At their meeting on Thursday, Aug. 29, township supervisors voted to reject the one bid they received for the expansion of their underground fiber-optic cable network, and to restart the bidding process.

The township began soliciting bids in June to expand its underground fiber-optic network north for the benefit of the township’s “smart traffic” system. Presently, the fiber-optic network extends only as far north as Glen Eden Road.

The estimated cost of the project is $500,000, much of it already funded by a grant of $488,323 from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

According to township manager Dan Santoro, the bid process was broken into two parts — bids for the fiber-optic network, and bids for the camera system. While the township did receive a bid for the fiber-optic network expansion, it did not receive any bids for the camera system.

“We couldn’t go forward with only one part of it,” Santoro said. “We needed the whole project. So that’s why we asked the board to reject it and rebid it as one big project.”
