High school sports roundup: Slippery Rock football rolls to first win; Butler cross country has big weekend

Fred Campagna passed for 319 yards and four touchdowns as host Slippery Rock breezed past Franklin 38-7 in District 10 football action Saturday.

The Rockets, who built a 28-0 lead by halftime, received 163 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns from running back Owen Long, who caught one of Campagna’s touchdown tosses. Long paced the ground attack with 92 yards on 16 carries.

Cooper Glass snagged five passes for 114 yards and two scores while Doug Popovec had three catches for 79 yards, including a 60-yard TD reception.

Zach Lasko booted a 23-yard field goal for Slippery Rock, which led 38-0 before Franklin scored on a short run by Caiden Mincer late in the fourth quarter.

The Rockets (1-1) travel to Sharon on Friday.

New Brighton 43, Summit Academy 27 — The Lions’ 22-point fourth quarter sealed Summit’s fate in this non-conference matchup in Herman.

A 60-yard interception return for a touchdown put the Knights up early, but New Brighton scored the next 21 points and never trailed again.

Juelz Moretti caught two scoring passes from Demetrius Crosby, who added a touchdown pass to Demonte Smith-Wiggins.

The Knights (1-1) will now prepare for their first road challenge of the season, Friday at Freedom.

Cross Country

Butler’s boys and girls teams had multiple top-five finishes Saturday at the 50th McDowell Cross Country Invitational in Erie.

The girls finished second (45 points) to host McDowell (40) with senior Makayla McLister (20 minutes, 12.65 seconds) and freshman Zari Golojuh (12:16.77) finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Meadville’s Megan Puleio won in 19:28.76. Madison McGarrah (20:56.63) and Kyra Olivares (20:56.97) rounded out the Top 10.

On the boys’ side, senior Zachary Slear (16:45.58) and sophomore Brendan Eicher (16:47.29) finished third and fourth, respectively, to lead the Tornado to a third-place finish (47 points) behind champion McDowell and Taylor Allderdice. Ethan Thomas (17:07.11) and Logan Rogers (17:16.94) finished eight and ninth, respectively, for Butler. McDowell senior Kamden Kramer won the boys title in 15:53.62.

Girls Volleyball

Channing Popovich totaled 24 kills and 12 blocks for Butler, which hosted the 10-team Spikefest Tournament on Saturday.

The Golden Tornado finished 6-3 in pool play before defeating Maplewood and Hopewell to reach the final, where the Golden Tornado fell to Seneca Valley 25-23.

Other standouts for Butler included Audrey Lehman (42 kills, seven aces), Raina Lewandowski (29 kills, eight aces), Julia Mason (99 assists, nine aces), Brynn Cornibe (15 kills), Sarah Lucas (24 digs, eight aces), Taylor Simon (31 digs, seven aces) and Jackie Shields (six aces).

Seneca Valley stats were not available.
