Tammy L. Schuey has been named publisher of the Butler Eagle and Cranberry Eagle, as well as Business Matters magazine.

Ron Vodenichar, president of Eagle Media and Eagle Printing Company, announced the promotion at the Celebrate Business event hosted by the Butler County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Sept. 4, where Schuey was also awarded the Stan Kosciuszko Leadership Excellence Award.

Schuey, who has been general manager for several years, takes over the title from Vodenichar, who will remain president of the companies. Schuey, a 33-year-employee of the Eagle, has experience in all facets of the business and is also a well-known community leader.

“I am very proud,” Schuey said after the announcement. “I have loved this organization for 30-plus years, and on a night where I was honored with the leadership excellence award, to be given the opportunity to lead this organization even more, it's just an incredible night. I had no idea this was happening.”

A native of East Brady and graduate of Lenape Technical School, Schuey has lived her entire life in Western Pennsylvania; she currently resides in the Chicora area.

Jamie Wise Lanier, treasurer of Eagle Media and daughter of Vernon Wise Jr., chairman emeritus of the company, praised Schuey.

“My father would be so proud to have Tammy as the second woman publisher,” she said. “We are so excited for her.”

Vernon Wise’s grandmother, Bertha Wise, served as publisher in the early 1900s, after the death of her husband, Levi.

President of the Chamber of Commerce, Jordan Grady, complimented Schuey and the Butler Eagle’s commitment to community, noting that the Eagle has been a member of the Chamber since its beginning. “Tammy is the right person to be the publisher of the Eagle, to lead it into the future.”

Butler County Commissioner Leslie Osche echoed those sentiments.

“This is such a well deserved position,” she said. “The newspaper will thrive under her leadership.”

Osche said Schuey has the creativity and willingness to try new things that the paper needs to survive, while honoring the newspaper’s legacy.

Schuey joined the Eagle in 1991 and previously served as director of technology and information and as assistant general manager.

“Tammy has always been a strong supporter of the newsroom. She believes in community journalism, in the Butler Eagle and in Butler County,” said Donna Sybert, managing editor of the Eagle.

Schuey has been recognized for both her community service and her work in the industry. In 2006, she was named Butler County Employee of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce. Editor and Publisher trade news magazine recognized her as a Production All-Star in 2010 and as a member of the 2024 15 Over 50.

She serves on the board of multiple community organizations, including the Ellen O'Brien Gaiser Center, the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation and the Community Development Corporation of Butler County. She is a member of the board of trustees for the Butler County Family YMCA and the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation.

“I am so appreciative of everything that Ron has done for me, and for the Butler Eagle as publisher before me,” Schuey said. “He has taught me so much. I also want to thank the Wise family for supporting me as well as local journalism.”
