High school sports roundup: Karns City boys soccer wins on Mason Bell’s 2OT goal; Butler golf wins in playoff

Mason Bell scored twice, the most dramatic of which being a double-overtime winner off a through ball from Carter Ritzert to give Karns City boys soccer a 3-2 win Thursday over West Shamokin.

Bell also scored in the first half, off an assist from Mason Sherwin. Colton Christie scored on a free-kick header (assist from Trevor Rumbaugh) with 10 minutes left in regulation.

Slippery Rock 2, West Middlesex 0 — Max Kovasik scored both goals in the Rockets’ win, while Logan Berry provided an assist on one of them. Josh Book recorded three saves in net.

Knoch 3, Shaler 0 — Three different Knights found the back of the net in Friday’s victory: Will Schwalm, Liam Avon and Austin Friedline. Friedline also had an assist. Barrett Duffy stopped one shot in the shutout.

Boys Golf

Butler boys golf beat North Allegheny in playoff fashion, winning on an extra hole after tying through nine holes 187-187.

The Golden Tornado got a match-low 35 from Codi Fennel. Blake Scott and Jase Renwick shot 37s each for Butler (5-5, 4-5 section).

Knoch 233, New Castle 254 — Jeremy Scheidt shot a team-low 40 to lead the Knights to a win. Aaron Voltz and Ben Ferraro carded 47s, and Jake Jones a 48.

Seneca Valley 184, Pine-Richland 189 — Marcos Lopez and Josh Marquardt each carded 36 to pace the Raiders. That was one stroke behind Pine-Richland’s Will Hilton for the low round of the day, but SV had all five scoring golfers card a 38 or better. Tyler Garvin and Anthony Cardosi each shot 37, and Brody Pirt chipped in a 38.

Girls Tennis

Butler fell to 4-4 (1-4 section) after a 5-0 loss to North Allegheny. The Golden Tornado were unable to pick up a set, with Singles 1 player Laini Spohn dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Mia Kaufman.

Pine-Richland 5, Seneca Valley 0 — The Raiders (4-3, 2-2 section) were shut out in a section match. The Doubles 1 pair of Anna Coon and Gianna Guandolo was the only one to win a set, falling to Deeya Nayyar and Priya Shah 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Girls Volleyball

Raina Lewnadoski and Julia Mason had huge nights to lead Butler to a 3-1 win over Mars.

Lewandowski had a double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs, and Julia Mason also had a double-double of 42 assists and 21 digs. Audrey Lehman led the Golden Tornado (4-0), who won by set scores of 18-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-22, with 18 kills, while Channing Popovich had 13. Sarah Lucas had 23 digs and four aces.

A-C Valley 3, North Clarion 1 — Maddy Dehart had 10 kills, six blocks, four digs and two aces in the Falcon’s win (set scores: 25-14, 20-25, 25-12, 27-25). Grace Agostino had six kills, a dig and an ace, and Nichole Wingard had four kills, five assists, five digs and three aces.

Slippery Rock fell to Cochranton 3-0. CJ Sabo, Adison Novad and Marissa Metzka each had two kills, and Lyla Runtas had five digs.

Seneca Valley beat Hampton 3-0. And Moniteau lost to mercer 3-0 (set scores: 25-8, 25-20, 25-12). No stats were provided for either game.
