M. Lucille ‘Lucy’ Fergus
M. Lucille “Lucy” Fergus, 101, of Slippery Rock, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024, at Grove Manor in Grove City, where she has resided for the past three years.
She was born in Worth Township, Butler County, on May 4, 1923, to William John “W.J.” Taggart and Bertha V. Moore Taggart. She married James Hugh Fergus on Oct. 2, 1943. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2011.
Lucy was a homemaker and active member of Highland Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock, where she previously had served as an elder, clerk of session, deacon and Sunday school superintendent. She was a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association of the church. “We will miss her smile, welcoming hug and family meals filled with laughter and love.”
Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Sankey of Altoona, Gail Hilton of Mount Chestnut and Becky (Jim) Richter of Chesterfield, Va.; two sons, James H. (Linda) Fergus II of Freeport and John D. (Stacie) Fergus of Loveland, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, William Fergus in 1980; sister, Eleanor Smith; brothers, Art, Clarence, Clair and Paul; and sons-in-law, Don Sankey and Brent Hilton.

FERGUS — The family of M. Lucille “Lucy” Fergus, who died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024, will receive the public from 10:15 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at Highland Presbyterian Church, 310 Franklin St., Slippery Rock.
A celebration of life service will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, led by William “Billy” Daugherty III, grandson of Lucy, and the Rev. Jeffery Curtis, pastor of Highland Presbyterian Church, who will co-preside.
The family will continue fellowship with friends immediately following the public service with a luncheon in the church fellowship hall.
A private interment service will occur at Slippery Rock Cemetery immediately prior to the public service on Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be given to Highland Presbyterian Church or Slippery Rock Fire and Rescue.
