Eugene Anthony Mercurio, 97, of Butler, passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, at Advanced Care Center with his loving family by his side.

Born in Butler on April 7, 1927, he was the son of the late Pietro and Angeline Fragale Mercurio.

Eugene was retired from the Inspection Department of Butler Armco.

He was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Peter Roman Catholic Church.

A veteran of World War II, he served as a private medic to Admiral James Pryor in the U.S. Navy.

He belonged to the St. Vincent College Development Club, the Butler Armco Employees Association and AARP. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Eugene wanted to be remembered as a family man. He will be remembered by many for his kindness and generosity.

He is survived by four children, Thomas Mercurio and his wife, Merry Jayne, of Butler, Ronald Mercurio and his wife, Mary Beth, of Butler, Sara Kowal and her husband, Richard, of Pittsburgh and Gina Mercurio of Sewickley; a niece, Vicki Phillips White, of Chicora; three grandchildren, Julian Mercurio, Megan Byers and Jordan Mercurio; five great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and his special buddies, Dick Rider and Joe Lutz.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Jayne Trimbur Mercurio, who passed away Aug. 1, 2002; and two sisters, Rose Pelliccione and Florence Thompson.

The family would like to thank the staff of Advanced Care Center, VNA Hospice and At Home Nursing and Therapy for their compassionate care.

MERCURIO — Friends of Eugene Anthony Mercurio, who died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, will be received from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at MARTIN FUNERAL HOME, 429 Center Ave., Butler.

The celebration of a Mass of Christian burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at All Saints Parish, St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St., Butler, with the Rev. John J. Baver officiating.

Military honors will be accorded at the church by VFW Post 249, American Legion Post 778 and VFW Post 499.

Burial will take place in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Butler Meals on Wheels, 218 E. Jefferson St., Butler, PA 16001.
