High school sports roundup: Lily Staab, Moniteau girls volleyball win; Butler golf’s Paige Ponteous shoots 39

Lily Staab knocked down 15 kills in Moniteau’s 3-1 win Monday over Eisenhower.

Staab also had six digs and three aces, and Sophia Fleeger had 37 assists, five aces and three kills. Bella Hernandez had seven kills and four aces, and Sayge Brunst had six kills and two aces. Set scores were 25-21, 24-26, 25-15, 26-24.

Knoch 3, Kiski 2 — Karlee Buterbaugh had 10 kills and 15 digs to help the Knights improve to 2-1 on the young season. Jess Farbacher had 16 digs and seven kills.

North Clarion 3, Union 0 — Kolstin Wetzel had two kills, two aces, five blocks and a dig in Union’s loss (set scores: 25-17, 25-10, 25-23). Haley Corle had four kills and a dig.

Boys Golf

Butler got back to .500 in section play on the season with a 192-216 win over New Castle at Sylvan Heights Golf Course. Levi McClellan and Henry Bormes had the low rounds of the match, 37 apiece. Codi Fennel kicked in a 39 for Butler (6-5, 5-5 section).

Mars 183, Knoch 227 — Will Campbell led the Planets and the match with a 35 and was joined by Lukas Singh, Jackson Geiger and Keegan O’Leary atop the leaderboard, as that trio all shot 36.

Freeport 208, Deer Lakes 227 — Stephen Evans was the only golfer to shoot a sub-40, carding a 38 to lead the Yellowjackets (10-2, 9-0 section). Ethan Crooks added a 40, and Cam Zigo and Carson Kane tied with 41s.

Region 2 Mega Match — Ryan Parson shot a team-low 92 as Slippery Rock finished sixth out of seven teams with a 380. Parson’s score was 19th best individually.

Girls Golf

Mars had double duty Monday. The Planets finished second in the Seneca Valley Invitational, which kicked off in the morning, with 380 strokes. Makenna Myler led with an 88, followed by Elise Wadas (91) and Addison Pangonis (95).

Then in the afternoon, the Planets won a duel with Shaler 184-210. Myler shot a team-low 44. Three teammates shot sub-50s as well: Pangonis (46), Wadas (47) and Addie Nailler (47).

Butler 184, Kiski 231 — Paige Ponteous blew by the competition with an impressive round of 39 to lead the Tornado (7-5, 5-4 section). Macie McLister was the next lowest scorer on the day for either team, carding a 46 for Butler. And teammate Rylee Gage shot a 48.

KSAC Mega Match 5 — Moniteau finished third out of four teams with a 154 as Juliette Brown and Sophee Hazlet tied for fifth on the day with 50s. A-C Valley, which finished last with 184, got a 54 from Ruby Watson.

Girls Tennis

Doubles made all the difference in the Raiders’ narrow 3-2 victory over North Hills, as Doubles 1 pair Hannah Kenyon and Gianna Guandolo won 6-0, 6-4 and Doubles 2 pair Jenna Muenck and Gia Medici won a thriller 3-6, 6-2, 5-7. Anna Coon’s Singles 3 win over Hannah Kriegline 6-3, 6-2 also aided SV (5-3, 3-2 section).

Mars 4, Montour 1 — Gracie McCarty and Grace Nam won their singles matches, and the doubles pairs of Bella Pazzaglia/Elaina Riegler and Grace Getsy/Grace McMichael also picked up wins for the Planets.

Butler 3, Moon 2 — Laini Spohn claimed a Singles 1 victory over Kiera Wise 6-4, 7-5 to lead the Golden Tornado (5-4, 2-4 section) to a narrow win. Butler also got doubles wins from Maggie Bodamer and Olivia Porneluzi (6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-2 in Doubles 1) and Cassie Busler and Lindsey Lipp (6-4, 6-2 in Doubles 2).

Knoch 5, Riverview 0 — The Knights earned their first sweep of the season as Alex Jones, Alana Moroney and Katie Barlow had singles wins. Olivia Offstein and Abby Markiewickz had a doubles victory for Knoch, along with Chloe Winters and Mackenzie Glassic.

Girls Soccer

Knoch lost 3-0 against Shady Side Academy Monday night. No other details were provided.
