High school sports roundup: Seneca Valley cross country sweeps section meet with Butler, Pine-Richland

Seneca Valley’s boys and girls cross country teams swept a home tri-meet Tuesday against WPIAL Division I, Section III rivals, and some of the area’s top teams, Butler and Pine-Richland.

Sophomore Paige Damico dominated the girls field with a time of 19 minutes, 58.5 seconds to lead the Raiders, who had five of the top seven times. Sydney Heltzell finished 10 seconds behind, and Butler freshman Zari Golojuh came in third in 20:21.4.

SV girls beat Butler 20-36 and the Rams 15-50, while the Tornado beat PR 15-50.

The boys team results were much closer, although Seneca Valley’s Max Smith still won with a sizable lead, crossing the finish line in 16:22.7. Teammate Hunter Peterson finished second in 16:45. Butler’s Zachary Slear came in third (16:47.9), beginning a run of four Golden Tornado runners to finish third through sixth.

However, the Raiders’ depth made the difference. SV boys beat Butler 27-30 and Pine-Richland 18-43, while the Tornado beat PR 18-41.

Slippery Rock junior Hunter Doerflinger’s time of 19 minutes, 15 seconds paced the pack Tuesday as the Rockets’ boys downed Commodore Perry 15-44. Connor Zorn (21:46), Brady Bellis (21:58), Zachary Geisner (22:05) and Liam Robare (23:09) followed for Slippery Rock (1-1).

For the Rockets’ girls (2-0), junior Leah Perez placed first with a time of 23:07. Slippery Rock beat Commodore Perry 17-46.

Boys Soccer

In an 8-0 win over Obama Academy, Mars’ Miles Frazier recorded four goals and a pair of assists. Luke Hagen was in goal for the Planets’ Tuesday shutout.

Karns City 5, Keystone 0 — Kaydin Wilson notched a pair of markers and Carter Ritzert, Mason Bell and Trevor Rumbaugh each had one in the win.

Slippery Rock 9, Conneaut 2 — Zach Lasko had two goals and Cody Freehling, Anderson Franco, Alex Cagle, Ryan Strother, Max Kovacik, Nick Olshanski and Sam Caton added one each for the Rockets.

Freeport 12, Valley 1 — Angelo Porco and Xavier DeWitt had four goals apiece for the Yellowjackets.

Girls Tennis

Elaina Riegler, Grace Getsy and Lacey Kern had straight set singles wins as Mars defeated Riverview 5-0 on Tuesday.

North Catholic 5, Seneca Valley 0 — Brea Kelley, Delaney Kelley and Evelyn Marche had solo victories for the Trojanettes. Katie Hardy and Jessica Sinclair and Samantha Falcon and Macaria Stall earned doubles triumphs.

Boys Golf

Guided by Will Campbell’s 69, Keegan O’Leary’s 78 and Colin Stevenson’s 79, Mars places second at the MAC Tournament Tuesday.

With a 226, the Planets finished one stroke behind West Allegheny at the event, which featured 24 schools.

Girls Golf

Paige Ponteous shot a 38 for Butler at Suncrest Golf Course Tuesday, but Mars wound up with a 186-193 win.

Makenna Myler paced the Planets with a 44 while Elise Wadas followed with a 46. Madi Wolfe had a 44 for the Golden Tornado (7-6, 5-5).

Girls Volleyball

Leah Schreckengost had 13 kills and 14 service points as Freeport swept Valley to open WPIAL Section 2-3A play Tuesday night. The scores of the match were 25-20, 25-3 and 25-13.

Macy Stivenson had 16 service points and eight digs for the Yellowjackets (3-0, 1-0), who next visit Knoch on Thursday

Slippery Rock 3, Wilmington 0 — Adison Novad had 11 aces for the Rockets while CJ Sabo added four blocks and four kills. Zoey Pankratz chipped in with 11 assists as Slippery Rock won by scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-16.
