High school roundup: Butler ekes by Mars in a boys golf playoff round

Jase Renwick, Boden Lenyk, Blake Scott and Levi McClellan pushed Butler’s boys golf team to an eight-man playoff win in hosting Mars at Slippery Rock Golf Club on Wednesday.

The two sides were square at 189 through nine holes before the Golden Tornado moved to 7-5 (6-5 in section). Renwick paced Butler with a 35 and Will Campbell carded the same for the Planets.

– With a 33, Union/A-C Valley’s Joe Rapp led all golfers at Wednesday’s KSAC Mega Match No. 7 at Hunter’s Station Golf Course. The Falcon Knights finished with a team score of 226, fifth out of nine squads. Moniteau — paced by Connor Ealy’s 39 — was fourth with a 217. Chloe Fritch carded a 40 for Karns City, which placed seventh with a 239.

Freeport 197, Burrell 226 — Aiden Bauman led the Yellowjackets with a 38 at River Forest Country Club. Cam Zigo followed with a 39 for Freeport (11-2, 10-0).

Seneca Valley 176, New Castle 232 — The Raiders’ Brody Pirt and Marcos Lopez both carded a 34 in the win at Cranberry Highlands.

Cross Country

Moniteau sophomore Peyton Beck finished third with a time of 18 minutes, 48 seconds as the Warriors’ boys cross country team bowed to Central Clarion 20-37.

Alexis Kirschner paced Moniteau’s girls team with a 22:36 — finishing second in the race — but the Warriors fell to Central Clarion 22-36.

– North Catholic’s Tyler Carroll was the overall winner in a boys section meet with Deer Lakes, Shady Side Academy, Riverview and Knoch on Tuesday, finishing in 17:12. The Trojans beat the Lancers by a 22-33 count and Knoch by the same score.

North Catholic beat out Shady Side Academy 23-32 and fell to Riverview 22-34.

On the girls’ side, the Trojanettes had the top five finishers and beat Deer Lakes 15-50, Riverview 15-38, Shady Side Academy 15-48 and Knoch 15-48.

Girls Volleyball

Audrey Lehman had 17 kills and seven digs in leading Butler to a 3-0 win over North Hills on Wednesday night. The scores of the match were 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17.

Ashlan Tosadori posted four kills and three digs while Brynn Cornibe had four kills and two blocks.

A-C Valley 3, Karns City 2 — The Falcons won even after dropping the initial two games, 25-21 and 25-10, on Tuesday night. A-C Valley surged back after that with set wins of 25-14, 25-20 and 15-8. Maddy Dehart had eight kills, seven blocks and four digs for the victors while the Gremlins’ Naomi Venesky had four aces and 10 kills.

Mars 3, Hampton 0 — Setter Gabi Weldemann racked up 33 assists and Lily Javor had 10 total kills in the Planets’ victory on Tuesday night. Mars won by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-18.

Knoch 3, Highlands 0 — The Knights opened section play on Tuesday night by sweeping the Golden Rams 25-18, 25-17 and 25-20. Alena Tekely had 11 service points for Knoch (3-1, 1-0) and Karlee Buterbaugh posted 11 digs and nine kills.

Boys Soccer

Knoch’s Austin Friedline had a hat trick for Knoch and Evan Haas deposited the other goal as the Knights beat Kiski Area 4-0 on Tuesday. Knoch is back in action at home on Thursday against Obama Academy.

North Catholic 6, Burrell 2 — Each of the Trojans’ scores came in the second half of the Tuesday night section win. Justin Garvey and Arthur Mendonca each had a pair of goals while Brody Kennedy and Michael Riley also got on the board.

Girls Soccer

Karns City’s Katelyn VanDyke scored a pair of goals for the second straight game in the Gremlins’ 4-0 Wednesday win over Forest. Phoebe Brandon added a marker after scoring two in Karns City’s 7-0 win over Keystone on Tuesday night.

Savanna Prescott earned the shutout in net against the Fires as the Gremlins moved to 7-1 on the season.
