High school sports roundup: North Catholic’s Kelley sisters clinch berths in WPIAL singles championships
North Catholic sophomore Brea Kelley reached the finals of the WPIAL Section 3-2A girls tennis singles tournament Thursday at Indiana High School.
Kelley, the No. 2 seed, received a bye into the quarterfinals before defeating Knoch’s Alexandria Jones (10-0) and her sister and teammate at North, Delaney Kelley (3-6, 6-0, 6-3) to reach the title match. She was defeated there by top-seeded Grace Stitt of Hampton (6-3, 7-6).
Delaney Kelley, a freshman, had defeated Ellis School’s Elyse Brennan and Hampton’s Abigail Anderson to reach the semifinals. Her day ended with a victory over Indiana’s Eve Kuzneski in the third-place consolation match.
Brea and Delaney Kelley will both compete at the WPIAL Class 2A tournament, which begins Wednesday at Bethel Park High School. Brackets will be released next week.
Knoch’s Jones earned a first-round win over Riverview’s Ella Brozak. Also competing for the Knights was Alana Moroney.
Class 3A — In the Section 2 tournament at North Allegheny High School, Butler’s Laini Spohn defeated North Hills’ Adelaide Seigworth in the first round before falling to Moon’s Kiera Wise.
Seneca Valley’s Sydney Blucher won a preliminary-round match against Shaler’s Grace Grabowski. Blucher was defeated in the first round, as was SV’s Alaina Brody, Butler’s Emily Hinch and Mars’ Gracie McCarty and Gianna Kampian.
Butler closed out WPIAL section play with a 191-233 win over Knoch at Butler Country Club. Boden Lenyk carded a nine-hole round of 35 for the Golden Tornado (8-5, 7-5). Blake Scott shot a 37 and Levi McClellan a 38 for the victors. For the Knights, Aaron Voltz and Jeremy Scheidt each had a 46, and Tavion Nunes carded a 47.
Freeport 193, Valley 226 — Ethan Crooks shot a 35 to lead Freeport to a comfortable victory. Crooks was three strokes better than the next closest golfer, teammate Stephen Evans. The Yellowjackets (13-2, 11-0 section) also got 39s from Cam Zigo and Carson Kane.
Max Kovacik recorded a hat trick in Slippery Rock’s 4-0 win over rival Grove City.
