Motorcyclist injured in collision with bear cub

A motorcyclist was injured in a collision with a bear cub in Penn Township, near 345 Dinnerbell Road, on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 13.

Amber Saluga, of Saxonburg, sustained a broken leg and was transported by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital. She later was transferred by ambulance to a Pittsburgh hospital, according to her aunt, Jarah Roxberry, of West Sunbury.

Roxberry said Saluga was on her way home from work when she hit the cub.

“Amber said two men stopped, and the homeowner also came out to help,” Roxberry said.

The cub was injured but not killed, according to Roxberry. A second cub and mother bear were not involved in the collision, she said.

Sgt. Cheryl Cranmer of the Penn Township Police Department said officials were concerned with the crowd of people gathered on the highway.

“Crowds of people can make mama bear more nervous,” she said, “especially with a cub on one side of the road and mom and the second cub on the other.”

The state game warden was called to the scene, Cranmer said.

“We spoke with the game commission, hoping the mother and cubs could be moved to north, where they would be more safe,” she said.

This could be the same bear that has previously been spotted in the area, Cranmer said. She said she did not know if the bears were captured.

Cranmer urged drivers to be cautious.

“With all of the wildlife on the roads, especially deer, drivers need to have 360-degree awareness,” she said.

Saluga will undergo treatment for multiple fractures to her leg, Roxberry said.

Officer Korey Zarnick of the Penn Township Police Department responded to the accident.

The game commission could not be reached Friday evening.
